Rome day 1

Buon giorno!

My friend, Lindsay, and I woke up at 4 am this morning to catch a shuttle to Lyon, from where we were supposed to fly at 7 am. However, being Easyjet and adding in glacial weather conditions, we were delayed an hour and a half. We arrived in Rome at 10 am or so and then headed to our hosel. Next stop was a cafe around the corner where we grabbed sandwiches. It was our first experience speaking Italian so we were able to point and say gratzie and prego but that was about it. This morning it was snowing when we arrived in Rome, but by afternoon it had turned into rain. We perservered, though, and made it to the Colliseum and then wondered throughout the city. Wherever you look there are ancient ruins surrounded by apartment buildings and stores. By the time we realized it, it was 6:30 and we were exhausted and wet so we headed back to the hostel to thaw out.

After bearing the rumblings of our stomachs for as long as we could, we stopped at a restaurant around the corner. We started with a REALLY good red wine, then we each ordered a pizza, and dessert. Then as a thank you, they gave us gelato. Oh my goodness, we were so happy after. I feel like a traitor saying this but the Italian wine definitely rivals French wine and gelato has no equivalent. After loosening our belts a little, we headed back around the corner to the hostel and then passed out. A funny thing that we noticed: when entering stores or restaurants, without saying a single word, the Italians would address us in English. We must really look out of place here, despite our efforts. Also, the keeper of the hostel is pretty friendly. I could not open the door to the room and he came out and opened it for me and then kissed me on the cheeks. Later, he came in our room to talk to our Italian roommate and he touched me on the face and invited me to an Irish pub with him tomorrow.

Yes, we both ate all of our own full-fize pizza

  1. Hey! I'm so jealous! As much as I loved Paris and most definitely Montpellier, I loved Rome even more.

I have to recommend a place to eat to you and hopefully you get this post in time. I cannot for the life of me remember what the name is or where it's located but it's this quaint little pizzeria around the corner from the hotel where we stayed. Basically if you come out the hotel doors, turn left and I think it's the first street, walk across the street, make a left when you cross the block and walk a couple blocks down it's this quaint little hole in the wall that serves the worlds best gyros. I was there for three days and ate it every day!

That's the address to the hotel. It's called Hotel Caravel. If you want something to do just because it seems fun you should look this place up. Also there are a bunch of street vendors (Indian guys I think) selling along that street. Great deals even though they're annoying. So to reiterate:

1)Sorry this post was so long
2)I hope you read this post in time
3)I hope you find this place!

    Best,
    Nadine

  2. Hey!
We searched but didn't find it :( It's amazing how good Italian pizza is though--no going back to Domino's! Thanks for the tips!!
